Post-Op Instructions
Take medications as prescribed
If Ibuprofen is recommended, take up to 800mg every 8 hours for 3 days, even if you are not having discomfort.
Avoid hot food and drink for 24 hours. You can eat anything that you can manage, but chew on the non-operated side of your mouth. Avoid citrus, highly spiced foods and alcoholic beverages: these can cause pain.
Avoid excessive exertion of any type for 24 hours.
Do not brush surgical site. Gently swish with the prescribed mouthwash twice daily until normal plaque control can be resumed.
Apply ice intermittently (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) on the face, over the operated area.
Swelling is not unusual. The swelling generally begins 1 to 2 days after the operation and subsides gradually in 3 to 4 days. If the swelling is painful or appears to become worse, please call the office.
Occasional blood in the saliva may occur and is not unusual. If there is considerable bleeding, take a piece of gauze or a damp tea bag and apply pressure for 20 minutes. Do not remove it during this period to examine it. If the bleeding does not stop at the end of 20 minutes, please call our office. Do not try to stop the bleeding by rinsing.
If “packing material” was placed over the surgical site, it may come out on its own. If it does not, it will be removed at your post-op appointment
Please call or e-mail our office with any questions or concerns.
